” ngg_triggers_display=”never” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]

The Hood To Coast relay, known as “The Mother of All Relays”, is the largest in the world. 1,050 teams of 8-12 runners participate in the 199-mile race that starts at the top of Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean in Seaside, Oregon. The race in total consists of thirty-six legs where each runner completes three of the legs. Each ranging in distance from 3.80 to 7.83 miles. The legs vary in difficulty as well due to the varying Oregon terrain.

TPG’s 2018 Hood to Coast team included: Shannon Kephart, Adam Johnson, Karen Demus, Max Dimm, Janet Rodriguez, Ben Murphy, Austin Early, Ragan Corliss, plus substitute family and friends: Randy Cruickshank, Grace Cruickshank, Clement Lallement, Joshua Griffie, and Kathryn G McInturff.

We were very grateful to complete the run without having to take on running extra legs thanks to some quick volunteers who joined our team! Thanks to the kids of our organizer, Karen Demus, and our CEO, Rod Cruickshank, plus a significant other, for stepping in to help replace people with injuries. However, the drivers are the true heroes… Thanks to Tim Deggendorfer and Karen’s son, Reggie McInturff! Also thanks to our other volunteers Corinna McIntire and Karen’s husband.”

When asked what the best part of the experience was, Ragan said, “The best part is how good you feel when finishing at the end! It took true teamwork and reliance, lots of training, endurance, mind over matter mentality, plus a couple sleepless nights…we really felt like we overcame trials and tribulations by the end! […]

Putting Recessions into Perspective

As the U.S. economy enters its 10th year of expansion, many pundits are starting to ask when the party will be over. Some even believe the next downturn in the economy is imminent. While none of us have that crystal ball, it’s worth recalling what a recession actually looks like.

According to Ronald Reagan during the 1980 presidential campaign, “Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his”. Less politically, a common definition for a recession is two consecutive quarters of declining real GDP (gross domestic product minus inflation). The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the official recession dating organization, offers a more qualitative definition as “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales”.

The chart below represents real GDP between 1948 and 2018. The gray, vertical lines represent recessions. Not surprisingly, in every recession, real GDP has declined.

The 11 recessions in the past 70 years give us a fair amount of data to examine:

  • On average, recessions happen every 6.4 years
  • The longest time between recessions was 10 years (during the boom of the ‘90s)
  • The shortest time between recessions was one year (between the 1980 and 1981 recessions)
  • Recessions last, on average, around 11 months
  • The longest recession was the “Great Recession” in ‘08 at 18 months
  • The shortest recession was the 1980 recession at 6 months

The most severe recession in terms of magnitude (measured as the decline in peak-to-trough GDP) and length is the one freshest in our minds, the Great Recession of 2008-2009. Since it’s human nature to set our expectations based on our […]

Are you Exposed?

Answer these nine questions to find out

The world is an unpredictable place.  Despite our best efforts to protect ourselves from risk, a catastrophic financial loss could occur at any time. Your risk might be greater than you think, especially in our litigious society. An unfavorable legal judgment could exceed your savings and put future earnings and other assets at risk. By reviewing the following questions, you can gain a better understanding of your risk exposure and how to take measures to mitigate that risk.

  1. Are you an avid collector?

If you have expensive artwork and collectibles in your home, you need to ensure proper security measures to avoid theft of your prized possessions. It’s also important to confirm with your insurance agent that they are adequately covered to their full market value under your insurance policy. Be sure to display art pieces away from harmful household activity, direct sunlight, heat (above fireplace or near heat register or radiator) or smoke (from fireplace or tobacco use).

  1. Do you have children?

You may be financially responsible for some, or all, of the damages caused by the negligent or intentional acts of your minor, dependent children living at home. Exposures include driving the family car, letting a friend drive your car, having a party while you are out of town and bullying a minor online or in person. You are equally at risk if your children’s friends are injured in your home, on your property or while you are driving them to school or other activities, as it is possible that other parents may sue you. Are your assets and future income protected adequately?

  1. Are your children of driving age?

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the […]
